12.26 is pleased to present Los Angeles-based artist Henri Paul Broyard in his first solo exhibition at the gallery’s Dallas location.
Like walking through a dream, encountering Henri Paul Broyard’s paintings feels like journeying through a cosmic neighborhood of familiar sites and new curiosities.
A cluster of interior paintings envelopes the gallery in a soft pink haze. Interiors are significant for Broyard, who views them as sights for deep visual introspection. So many memories and emotions are associated with internal spaces. Consider the feeling of watching a family home sell, or an old dorm room be renovated into a social venue.
Each painting contains the semblance of a room, but things are eschewed, entire walls turn into abstract patterns just to meet an articulated ceiling or an ambivalent edge. And, as in the tradition of still life painting, furniture is incorporated into the composition, along with familiar objects such as plants, lamps, books, tables, and chairs.
Subtracted from the works are figures; this is intentionally done by Broyard in the planning of his paintings. Starting with photographs from his own family photo albums or from strangers’, Broyard manipulates the images from their original sources, altering nearly every aspect.
Put all together on one canvas, Broyard’s paintings transport viewers to another space, a space of fleeting memories and familiar feelings.
