Karla García is a multidisciplinary artist who creates desert landscape installations as a metaphor for her upbringing in the border towns of Juárez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. Leveraging clay as her primary medium, her cacti sculptures symbolize her deep connection to her Mexican cultural heritage while embodying the indomitable spirit of collective immigrant narratives in the United States. Through her artistry, she adeptly forges a symbolic link between plants, the human body, and the environments they inhabit, inviting viewers to contemplate the profound interconnectedness of nature and human experience. Notably, her vessels are meticulously crafted through coil-building and hand-pinching techniques, meticulously shaping the cactus's spines to capture their distinctive essence. Some of her sculptures undergo a firing process, while others remain in their raw, ephemeral state, purposefully evoking the enduring and shared nature of the land we share.
Karla García (b. 1977, Juárez, Chihuahua, México) received her MFA in Ceramics at University of North Texas, Denton, TX (2019). Recent solo exhibitions include: Norman Brown Gallery, Goldmark Cultural Center, Dallas, TX (2022); 12.26, Dallas, TX (2021) The Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, TX (2020), among others.
