12.26 is pleased to present Running, a virtual solo exhibition by Ellery Tye Thompson, the artist's first solo exhibition and the third edition of our new online series, Cabinet.
The four paintings presented in Running convey a multitude of conceptual threads that Thompson pulls at—fragility and strength, presence and absence, the body and its mechanisms, resilience and fragility, and the suspension of time, among others.
Each work features the same image: four runners aligned in a congruent formation, their murky, muted shadows lying just beneath their forms. There is a harmony in their consistency, yet a discord between the tones, contrast, and brushwork.
Thompson explores visions of uncertainty in her work and utilizes athletics as a theme, addressing the embodiment of disability and chronic disease. Thompson says, "I explore how motion and stillness disrupt and transcend our perception of time, how athletes need to care for their bodies, mimicking the relationship sick people have to theirs, and the role observation and stillness have in watching sports. The way we use our bodies in daily life, the way our bodies allow or disallow themselves to be used…"
Ellery Tye Thompson (b. 1999, Louisville, KY) lives and works in Louisville but is moving to Los Angeles, CA, soon. Thompson received her MFA in 2024 from the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD, and her BA in Art and Art History in 2021 from Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA.
